When installing blown in or batt insulation, it’s important to make sure it covers the entire attic floor, filling all cracks and voids.

Attic Insulation Efficiency Tips

One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make when insulating their attic is leaving gaps or spaces around joists. Even the smallest gaps allow warm air to leak into the attic and work against your furnace’s efficient operation. When you are laying down insulation, use a foam sealer to close off these gaps.

Another important attic insulation tip is to avoid covering soffit vents with insulation. This will block fresh, outside air from entering the attic, which can cause moisture and mildew problems. If you have a recessed light fixture protruding into your attic, make sure all insulation is kept 3 inches away from this fixture (unless it is an IC-rated fixture). When using a foam sealer or adhesive spray along the edges of insulation, keep in mind that these products can be toxic.
